THE KELPIE
The Australian Kelpie is a highly intelligent and energetic herding dog bred specifically for work with cattle and sheep. Known for its stamina, agility, and versatility, the Kelpie thrives in rugged terrain and challenging conditions, making it ideal for expansive ranches and farms. Its instincts for herding are exceptionally strong, often allowing it to work independently or in tandem with handlers to manage large groups of livestock efficiently. Kelpies are loyal, eager to please, and quick to learn, though their high energy levels require consistent mental and physical stimulation. This breed is generally low-maintenance in terms of grooming but thrives with a clear job and purpose, making it a perfect fit for those who need a dedicated working companion.
LOYAL. INTELLIGENT. HARD-WORKING. GENTLE & FEIRCE.

ABOUT US
We are Taylor & Cathryn Kerns
Taylor and I have been raising kelpies since 2015, after Taylor fell in love with the breed while working in Australia. The breed's ability work softly and with the eye while also not be afraid to back down from a fight really caught Taylor's attention. Almost ten years later, and our kelpies have become ranch hands we depend on and are a wonderful addition to our family!

STARTING YOUR KELPIE
New to working with kelpies?
1. Bond & Basics: Build your bond and basic commands while your pup is little. Work on getting your pup to come to you and sit.
2. Encourage Instinct: Unlike many other working breeds, a kelpie's instinct is to bring animals to you. When your pup gets a little older, start them on smaller livestock like sheep/goats/weanlings so as to not trample their confidence. Let them experiment, have fun and bring animals to you!
3. Add Commands: When your pup feels confident in bringing animals to you, you can start adding directionals. Once they have their directionals down, you can have them help you push animals away from you.
